Loyola won the 2016 Charles Street Rivalry Game over Johns Hopkins by a score of 9-8. The game was played at Loyola’s Ridley Athletic Complex in Baltimore! The promise of an awesome rivalry game, warm February temperatures, and whispers of a free hat made for a packed house at the RAC, and Hopkins and Loyola delivered with one heck of a game.

In the first minute of the game, Loyola looked electric and Hopkins looked almost sluggish. While Hop quickly shook off the cobwebs and got right into the game, Loyola did build up an early 5-2 lead, which they would take to halftime. The Hounds looked in control, but you just knew Hop was going to come out fired up for the second half.

Loyola got scoring from a couple different places in the first half as Zach Herreweyers, Jeff Chase, Tyler Albrecht, Johnny Giufredda, and Pat Spencer all tallied markers for the Hounds. Spencer also added two assists and showed just how dangerous a developed freshman can be! Ryan Brown had Hop’s first two goals, and for a time, it looked like he was the only Blue Jay capable of beating his man one on one.
In the second half, Hopkins came out looking like a different team. They started dodging from X a lot more, and using a two-man game to mess with Loyola’s slide packages. By inverting, they took away Loyola’s comfort on D, and began to put in team goals. Loyola responded by going in and out of their zone defense, which worked well to keep Hopkins from stringing together too many quick goals. Loyola was still aggressive when in zone, and didn’t let Hopkins turn the game into a shooting gallery. Grant Limone played great in goal for Loyola, but giving Hop a free pass to shoot from 12-14 yards was going to be a losing proposition.

Limone finished with 10 saves, but played a really good game overall, and while watching this one it certainly seemed like he had more than 10. He made 4 big ones in the fourth quarter, and has been having a great season so far. Herreweyers led all players with 3 goals, while Jeff Chase added two. Pat Spencer was a big time player for Loyola as well, notching a goal to go along with three assists.
